How to Register on the CARB Clean Truck Check Portal: Step-by-Step Guide

Why you need a portal account

Every heavy-duty vehicle in California’s Clean Truck Check program must be registered through the CARB portal. This registration system enables CARB to monitor fleet compliance statewide and connects testing results to individual vehicles. Without an account, testers cannot upload compliance data and DMV registration holds cannot be released.

Step 1: Go to the CARB portal

Navigate to cleantruckcheck.arb.ca.gov using your web browser. Use only the official CARB website and avoid third-party alternatives.

Step 2: Create an account

Select “Create Account” and provide your business or personal details, including a valid email address, business name (if applicable), and password. You will receive a verification email. Click the link to activate your account.

Step 3: Add your vehicle

In the vehicle registration section, click “Add Vehicle.” Enter your California license plate number and VIN. The system will retrieve and display your vehicle’s registration information for confirmation.

Step 4: Verify your vehicle information

Review displayed details including engine model year, GVWR, and fuel type. These specifications determine whether you need OBD or OVI testing and how frequently testing must occur.

Step 5: Note your testing deadline

The portal displays your compliance status and testing deadline. Record this deadline and arrange testing accordingly.

Step 6: After testing

Your CARB-credentialed tester uploads results post-inspection. OBD results post immediately; OVI results require manual submission and several business days for processing. Return to the portal to verify current compliance status.
